The short-eared owl is an impressive bird of prey that is
active during the day. Yet you must be lucky to spot it in Flanders. After all,
it is a rare bird on the Flemish Red List.
In the sky you can recognize the short-eared owl by its
long, narrow wings and its swaying, resilient flight. When it is not hunting,
it usually sits on the ground or on a meadow pole.

Where does the short-eared owl live?
The short-eared owl lives in open areas such as dunes,
meadows, heathland, polders and marshes. It can be found in North and West
Europe, North and South America and Asia. In Flanders, the short-eared owl has
never been common and there are not breeding pairs every year. A number of
short-eared owls do hibernate with us every year. The largest numbers are
determined during the winter months.
What does the short-eared owl eat?
The short-eared owl mainly hunts mice and small birds. It
searches for prey by flying low over its territory. It usually does this during
twilight. During the breeding period, on the other hand, it hunts both during
the day and at night. It has to find much more food then.
How does the short-eared owl reproduce?
The short-eared owl nests on the ground between low
vegetation. It is the only European owl species that makes its own nest. Other
species often use abandoned nests of other birds. Between the months April and
May, the female lays 4 to 7 eggs in a shallow pit. She only breeds, but the
male helps to protect the eggs. After 24 to 28 days the young hatch.
