Owl is a night bird of prey. Depending on where it lives, it
may have a different color of plumage, masking the owl as the surrounding area.
Owl's head is round with big eyes, claws are long and sharp, and beak is
predatory and short.
Different types of owls have different sizes. The smallest
owl is a sparrow owl. Its size is only 17-20 cm, and its weight is 50-80 g. The
largest of the copulate owls is the owl. Its length is 60-70 cm, and its weight
is from 2 to 4 kg.
Life expectancy of an owl in nature is about 10 years, in
captivity these birds live up to 40 years. Very short life of an owl in the
natural environment is explained by the often occurring hunger and hunting for
owls of other birds of prey, such as hawks and golden eagles.
Owls' paws are very strong and short, and many species of
owls have operatives. Owls' claws are sharp and bent and help them quickly grab
a victim and hold him. The owl's flight is almost silent, thanks to the special
structure of feathers. The first external feathers are sawn and fringe-like.
The third and fourth quill of an owl is longer than the others. The tail is
rounded and trimmed, and the quill feathers are curved. The wingspan of the owl
is about 142-200 centimeters. These birds fly very fast: the owl's speed in
flight reaches 80 km/h.
The bird makes a characteristic clicking when it is
irritated or excited. It turns out thanks to its beak. The owl's beak is bent
from the beginning to the base, ends with a hook, the edges are smooth and
without cutouts.
Owls can rotate their heads 180 and even 270 degrees,
without causing any discomfort or harm. An owl bird is a predator, and it needs
to track its prey, so the eyes are located not on the sides, but in front.
The owl's eyes are fixed and look only straight ahead. To
change the direction of gaze, the bird must turn its head. In this case, the
owl's angle of view is 160 degrees, and its vision is binocular, unlike other
birds. Owls see the world in black and white. The crystalline lens is not in
the eyeball, but in the horn tube, so the birds can see well at night.
Owls have 4 times better hearing than cats. As soon as the
prey presents itself as a rustle or sound, the bird rushes lightning fast at
it.
